Review: Breckenridge Port Cask Finish
All this does is make me want to go visit Colorado again.
Colorado seems like a really cool place to be these days.
The Denver Nuggets just won their first NBA championship. The weather there seems to be not over 100 degrees at the moment. The state’s liberal laws make for a relaxed and chill environment. There’s hiking and skiing for the outdoorsy folks. There are breweries and distilleries for the indoorsy folks.
I am an indoorsy folk.
Stranahan’s, Leopold Brothers and Breckenridge are all distillers who have gained national distribution of their juice, and so far I’ve yet to be disappointed in their offerings. What’s more interesting, is that a few of the local homies say there’s more coming from the Rocky Mountain state. Distillers like Laws and Spirit Hound are turning heads, and many have bottle shops in Denver for easier engagement.
It should be noted that everything we consume has a terroir element, that being that the final product we consume comes from the soil. That the sourcing of those grains in that mash bill, matters. That the aging process of the juice in the barrel, matters. The water in Colorado, off of that mountain range, is going to differ from the water that runs via the rivers in Kentucky, for example.
It’s why experimentation matters, and it’s why we need to plan a group trip to Colorado in the near future.
Nose: Raisins and croissants. Maybe I’m just hungry.
Palate: Charred plums. Like one of my wife’s favorite full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
Finish: Like a full-bodied red wine. Slow burn. Hints of cornflakes and woody leather on the finish.
Key details: A Colorado bourbon whiskey that gets 4–6 months of final aging in Tawny Port wine casks. Was meh on the first dram, the second dram was better. Light amber in color, like the sugar-free syrup you get from Cracker Barrel. $52 at Total Wine & More

So there is a Breckenridge distillery you can go and hang out at?
This sounds like it’s worth a sip! Thanks for the recommendation.
